The above link is to a press release from Jim Anderton under the heading “Govt committed to long-term growth for pipfruit”.
Once more, no should be surprised when Mr Anderton acts in ways that are completely consistent with his well-known views on industry development. However I do find it frustrating that he should think that the government has a responsibility to support an industry that he himself admits is suffering from increasing competition, a glut of international supply and unprofitable returns. Despite all of these indications that the industry is a poor investment (for the private sector spending their own money, let alone Mr Anderton spending other people’s), he optimistically proclaims that the Government can make the industry grow.
If in fact he gets the chance to put his confidence to the test, it will be interesting to see how this pans out.
